What 2024 taught me

Writer: Grace SimGrace Sim

This year, if I had to sum up my journey in one word, it would be—truth.

Through my Ashtanga practice, I’ve learned what it truly means to be honest with myself. In yoga philosophy, there’s a principle called Satya—truthfulness. It sounds simple, doesn’t it? But the truth can be surprisingly hard to face, especially when it’s about ourselves.

During my practice, I encountered moments of resistance—inner blocks that I didn’t even realize were there. Sometimes it was denial, other times it was clinging to a habit or a pattern that I was too afraid to let go of. But then, one morning on the mat, it hit me—I wasn’t going to progress until I released what was holding me back. It wasn’t a loud, dramatic realization.

There were no fireworks or red carpets. It was quiet—like a whisper—but it shook me.

At first, my mind didn’t want to budge. I told myself, this is just how I’ve always done it, but eventually, I gave in and tweaked the way I practiced. That’s when the breakthrough happened. Not once, but over and over again in the months that followed. And with each small shift, I felt something unlock inside me—something deeper than just physical movement.

I realized that so much of our time is spent avoiding the truth—whether it’s about our fears, habits, or the stories we tell ourselves. We wonder why things don’t change, why we feel stuck, but the answer often lies in what we’re unwilling to see. And seeing the truth? It’s uncomfortable. It asks us to slow down, to sit in stillness, to peel back layers we’d rather leave untouched.

Ashtanga gave me that space. The repetition, the discipline, the silence—it all created a mirror where I could no longer hide from myself. It taught me that honesty isn’t about judgment; it’s about awareness. And awareness is what allows change to happen.

I wanted to share this because I know how easy it is to stay in patterns that feel familiar—even when they’re no longer serving us. But when we start practicing truth, even in the smallest ways, we create openings for transformation.

If there’s one thing I hope you take from this, it’s this: be brave enough to be honest—with yourself, your habits, your fears. Because honesty is the foundation for growth. And growth, just like yoga, is a practice. It’s not instant, but it’s always worth it.

Wishing you a great start for 2025. Happy New Year!
